While fall foliage is at its peak this month, use this time as a reminder to check on the health and growth of your trees.

While trees may seem low maintenance, you cannot simply ignore them! Attending to your trees seasonally protects against disease and insect infestation, both of which can lead to major damage and expenses.

Start by noting if any branches have grown over your electrical lines or the house.

Be sure to check for hazards such as broken, hanging limbs, dead trees, trees with hollow spots, trees leaning towards the house.

Why? Your safety and tree health are the primary reasons. Click here to see four reasons you should take down a tree.

This fall pruning can help protect trees from winter’s harsh weather and helps them fully bloom come spring. Consider hiring a tree specialist (approximately $60-90 for an inspection) who can also check for the presence of disease or insects and more and do any needed pruning or more involved work. Keep in mind that trees can change greatly over the course of a year due to storm damage, changes in health, etc. With early detection and treatment, these trees can likely be saved. If you do hire a tree specialist, ask if they can also deliver your firewood for the winter. Most tree companies also offer this service.
