Weekend Backyard Makeover

Cooler weather (aka no mosquito season) IS on the way! In this installment of our weekend transformation series, we tackle a weekend backyard makeover. With just a couple of days of effort, you can completely transform your backyard from “meh” to “magnificent.” It will be the yard everyone wants to hang out in this Fall.

Add a Firepit

Nothing adds ambiance to a backyard like a cozy fire. You can easily build your own fire pit in a weekend (click here for a handy step-by-step guide).

Not the handy type? Purchase a fire pit like this modern gas version we love from Joss & Main.

Give the Patio a Facelift

Paver PatioYou can update your concrete patio in a snap with one of these easy and inexpensive treatments. The first is to coat the surface with concrete dye in a fresh new color, like warm honey or black. You might even consider painting your patio in a modern pattern (think herringbone, chevron, or checkerboard).

Another option is to overlay slate tiles on the concrete. Check out this tutorial.

Add a Paver Patio

If you don’t have a patio, create one! Installing a paver patio is easier than you may think and adds tremendous charm to a backyard. There are so many varieties of pavers — from concrete to cobblestone, from bluestone to flagstone — you’re sure to find one that complements your backyard. Click here for a step by step lesson.

Add a Stone Path

Use quarter-inch crushed rock, which comes in a wide range of colors, for this project. First, determine the shape you want for the path. Then drive in stakes to mark it out. Next wrap terrace board (used most often for edging lawns) around the stakes. Then place four to five inches of crushed rock in the middle. You can and smooth the path by renting a plate compactor to finish the job. Another option for a backyard path is laying large flat stones (here’s a video tutorial).

If creating a path sounds like too much work, consider adding some large boulders to your backyard to add some height and dimension.

Punch Up the Landscaping

Install a Water Feature

Admittedly, this project is a bit more involved and may take the whole weekend. But the end result (both the look and sound of a water feature), are well worth the effort, adding a calming vibe to any yard. Here’s a step by step tutorial.

Jazz Up Your Fence

Have you always dreamed of having a home with a white picket fence? (Re)paint your fence to give it a new look.

Create Ambiance

Change out the cushions on your patio furniture or add an outdoor rug to your deck or patio. Maybe install a hammock!

The Bottom Line

As you can see, it’s easy to create a big change with a weekend backyard makeover. The best part? You don’t need to spend a fortune for dramatic results. With some creativity and effort, you can create a welcoming outdoor space where family and friends will want to gather.
