Summer is finally here! The kids are out of school, the weather is getting warmer, and the sun is staying out longer. While the days get longer, the kids need more things to do to keep themselves occupied. Looking for things to do with kids in Alexandria this summer? Good thing there is so many fun (and relatively inexpensive!) activities in Alexandria that the kids — and parents — will enjoy!
Alexandria Aces Baseball Game
Frank Mann Field at Four Mile Run Park, 3700 Commonwealth Avenue
Take the kids to a ballgame and enjoy some popcorn, nice weather, and America’s favorite pastime! The Alexandria Aces is a baseball team consisting of college baseball players from a variety of universities, all playing for Alexandria’s summer team. The Aces will have roughly 20 home games through the end of July.
Water Taxi to the National Mall
Alexandria City Marina, Cameron & Union Streets
One of the benefits of living so close to Washington D.C. is having access to so many free museums! The Potomac Riverboat Company offers rides from the Alexandria City Marina and drops off at the at The Wharf. Enjoy a ride on the Potomac River to DC’s museums and monuments. You can also hop on the evening cruise to the Wharf, which features an accessible waterfront, local parks, and the city’s vibrant music venues. Then stop by an ice cream shop in Old Town after a long day of walking around the District.
First Thursdays in Del Ray
Mt. Vernon Avenue
On the first Thursday of every month from April to September, Del Ray hosts a free outdoor street festival on Mount Vernon Avenue. Hosted by the Del Ray Business Association, First Thursdays include free food, live music, and different activities for children. Local businesses line the streets and create a happy atmosphere for all visitors.
Cameron Run Regional Park

All kids love going to the waterpark; luckily there is one right here in Alexandria! Cameron Run Regional Park offers a wave pool, water slides, and non-water activities such as an extreme playground, batting cages, and a putt-putt course. With so many activities at Cameron Run, everyone in the family is bound to have an unforgettable experience.
Escape Room Live
814 King Street
Fairly new to Alexandria, Escape Room Live is an interactive experience in which teams are locked into a room and have to use clues in the room to escape. The Old Town location currently has four different themed rooms, including “The Wizard’s Apothecary” and Sherlock Holmes, with different ranges of difficulty. Escape Room Live is the perfect rainy day activity for the family.
Alexandria Historical Scavenger Hunt/Ghost Tour
What better way to teach the kids about the history of Alexandria than through a scavenger hunt? Scavenger maps can be found at The Christmas Attic on South Union Street. Older children, will enjoy the Ghost & Graveyard Tour through the historic streets of Old Town. The tours start at the Ramsay House Visitors Center at 221 King Street.
Old Town Farmers’ Market
Market Square, 301 King Street
Every Saturday morning for over 260 years, the Old Town Farmers’ Market has been held in Market Square Plaza. Over 70 vendors sell everything from fresh fruits to artwork. The Old Town Farmers’ Market is the country’s oldest farmers’ market held continuously at the same spot. Come support local farmers and check out all of the cool offerings at this farmers’ market or one of the others held throughout Alexandria.
Celebrate Alexandria’s Birthday
Oronoco Bay Park, 100 Madison Street
Our lovely city celebrates its birthday every July with an all-out celebration on the Saturday after Independence Day. Bring some lawn chairs or a big blanket to the Old Town waterfront and enjoy some live music by our very own Alexandria Symphony, a cannon salute, birthday cake, food vendors and a spectacular fireworks display to top off the night.
Torpedo Factory/ The Art League

Old Town’s iconic Torpedo Factory Art Center is full of open studios and galleries for visitors to tour daily. Check out its tenant, The Art League, which offers classes for both children and adults, as well as a fabulous selection of summer camps. Many different types of art are created at The Torpedo Factory, including paintings, photography, stained glass, and more. It is a truly enjoyable experience for the whole family.
