Nestled in the Fairfax County section of Alexandria is one of the DC area’s few enclaves of midcentury modern architecture, the Hollin Hills neighborhood.

This area is known for its fun and funky homes!

Hollin Hills Real Estate

The neighborhood is named for the nearby Hollin Hills Plantation, which was owned by George Mason. This 326-acre community consists of approximately 450 houses built between 1949 and 1971. The midcentury modern homes were designed by architect Charles Goodman, who also designed nearby Reagan National Airport. Renowned modernist landscape architect Dan Kiley worked to ensure the homes blended seamlessly into their woodsy surroundings.

Each home is oriented into the neighborhood’s hillside and toward the sun to provide privacy, natural light, and bucolic views. The neighborhood includes 31 acres of parkland.

Today, Hollin Hills’ design review committee advises on any building or modification of existing houses to maintain the community’s architectural integrity.

Hollin Hills was formally listed on the National Registry of Historic Places in 2013 and is also on the Virginia Landmark Historic District.

Hollin Hills Entertainment

The Hollin Hills Civic Association hosts several annual events that have become beloved traditions — July 4th festivities, a winter Potluck, and an Oktoberfest. The Hollin Hills Pool is a favorite gathering spot for the community. For golf and tennis lovers, the Belle Haven Country Club is just up the road. Or head to the nearby public Mount Vernon Rec Center, which offers one of the area’s only indoor ice rinks, a 25-meter heated indoor pool, a weight room, art and dance classes, and more.

Hollin Hills Favorites

Enjoy a fabulous dinner at the nearby River Bend Bistro or Cedar Knoll restaurant. Stop by Unwined’s Belle Haven location for that perfect bottle of wine (as well as beer, cigars and gourmet foods). Visit the charming Hollin Hall Variety Store for a trip down memory lane to a 1950’s era five-and-dime. The nearby “mom and pop” Village Hardware is a neighborhood gem as well; it is very well stocked and has an extremely helpful and knowledgeable staff.
