Winter Events in the DMV

As the chilly weather sweeps through the capital region, the DMV area comes alive with an array of captivating winter events. From ice skating to concerts to plays and comedy shows, there’s something for everyone to enjoy during the frosty season. Get ready to make unforgettable memories and embrace the spirit of winter in the DMV!

Ice Skate: 

The National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden Ice Rink 

Skate outdoors among famous sculptures. Tickets are sold in 45-minute sessions beginning on the hour so be prepared to begin skating at the top of the hour, or you could end up waiting a while! Buy tickets ahead of time and if time permits, take the opportunity to visit the works of art in the surrounding Sculpture Garden.

Hours: Sunday-Thursday, 11 am-9 pm; Friday-Saturday 11 am-11 pm

Open from November 20 through March 3, 2024 (weather permitting)

Cost: $12 adults and children 13+, $9 children 12 and under/age 60+/students/military service members, $6 rentals

Washington Harbour Ice Rink (Georgetown) 

This is a smaller rink, but overlooks the beautiful Georgetown harbor. Classes are offered for kids ages 3 and up. This is also a great date night spot to skate and then grab a drink after at one of the many surrounding restaurants and bars. 

Hours: Sunday-Thursday 11 am-8:30 pm; Friday-Saturday: 11 am-10:30 pm

Open from mid-November through late February (weather permitting)

Cost: $10 adults, $9 children/seniors/military, $7 rentals

The Wharf Ice Rink 

This is also a smaller rink, but it sits out on the Potomac River at the Wharf and there are tons of other activities, restaurants, and bars at the Wharf to explore once you have your fill of ice skating. Maybe even pair your ice skating with one of the above concerts and The Anthem! 

Hours: Monday-Tuesday: Closed; Wednesday-Friday: 4-10 pm;  Saturday: 12-10 pm; Sunday: 12-8 pm

Open from November 22 through February 

Cost: Adult: $12; Youth (12 & Under): $9; Skate Rental: $6; Group Rate (10 or more) includes skate rental: $14

Canal Park Ice Rink

Located in Navy Yard, this figure eight rink offers two-hour sessions with a 30 minute break in between. On Wednesdays opt for the ‘Ice and Slice’ online offer which includes admission, skate rental, and a slice of pizza! The rink also offers skating lessons. 

Hours: Monday-Friday: 2-10pm; Saturday: 12-11pm; Sunday: 12-10pm.  

Open from November 13 through TBD

Cost: $15 adults and children 13+, $12 children 12 and under/age 60+/students/military service members, $5 rentals Discounts available for online pre-registration.

Seth Meyers – Jan 12-13, The Kennedy Center 

Host of Late Night with Seth Meyers, alum of Saturday Night Live, and NYT bestselling author, Seth is a household name, you don’t want to miss his stand up routine! 

Jim Gaffigan – Jan 27-28, DAR Constitution Hall

The renowned American stand-up comedian, actor, writer, and producer, Jim Gaffigan, is known for his clean comedy routines. Along with making multiple Grammy-nominated comedy specials like, “Mr. Universe,” and “Cinco,” he has also appeared in movies like “13 Going on 30” and “It’s Kind of a Funny Story.”

Chris Distefano – Feb 3, Washington Theatre

The stand-up comedian made his big break on MTV’s shows Girl Code and Guy Code and became an MTV and Netflix regular. He frequently tells cringe-worthy stories of his family in his acts which will have you laughing so hard you cry! 

 

Restaurant Week:

DC Restaurant Week takes place from Jan 15-21. Take advantage of specially priced meals with cocktail and wine pairings. 

Alexandria Restaurant Week from Jan 19 – 28. After you enjoy DC restaurant week, cross the river and head to Alexandria for special $30, $40, or $50 prix fixe dinners. Special menus are available in-person at participating restaurants throughout Alexandria’s neighborhoods, including Old Town, Del Ray, Carlyle and Eisenhower, and the West End.

Washington Auto Show Jan 19-28, Walter E Washington Convention Center 

If you love cars you don’t want to miss this annual world-class event. Check out more than 600 new automobile models from 30+ car manufacturers inside the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. 

Monster Jam Jan 27-28, Capital One Arena 

The most action-packed motorsports event on four wheels! Witness world-class driver athletes and the most recognizable trucks tear up the dirt and compete in intense competitions of speed and skill. 

 

Go to a Play:

Disney’s Frozen through Jan 21, The Kennedy Center

The Tony Award-nominated production comes to the Kennedy Center on its tour across North America. The stage adaptation of Frozen features the songs you know and love from the original Oscar-winning film, plus adds a dozen new songs by the film’s songwriters.

Annie Jan 23-28, The National Theatre 

This beloved musical follows an orphaned girl, Annie’s, struggles and triumphs and showcases her unbending spirit. Featuring a slew of unforgettable songs, including “It’s the Hard-Knock Life,” “Tomorrow” and “Maybe”, the family-friendly production is sure to be a hit with the whole family. 

Shen Yun Jan 26-Feb 4

Shen Yun bring’s ancient China to life through dance, orchestra, and incredible scenery. All these elements come together to reveal 5,000 years of awe-inspiring Chinese stories and history. Discover powerful heritage and historical wisdom in this series of performances.
