President’s Day in Alexandria is truly something special! Alexandria loves to celebrate its native son and our nation’s first President throughout the month of February with several festive events and community celebrations.

Washington’s Birthnight Banquet & Ball

134 N. Royal Street, Alexandria, VA 22314 Take a trip back to 1799 to celebrate General Washington’s Birthday. This Alexandria tradition includes a traditional 18th-century banquet, English country dancing, dessert collation, re-enactors, and of course special guests General and Mrs. George Washington. Guests are encouraged to to wear period attire as well.

 

President’s Day Parade

Alexandria’s annual George Washington Birthday Parade takes place on the third Monday in February. It follows a one-mile route along the charming and historic streets of Old Town. It is the oldest and largest parade of its kind thanks to thousands of festive participants. The parade is the cornerstone event of the month celebrating Alexandria’s most famous resident.

The Cherry Challenge

The announcements of the winners the “Cherry Challenge” is also part of President’s Day in Alexandria. In this competition among Alexandria’s finest restaurants, each creates its own cherry-themed cocktail, appetizer, entrée, and/or dessert, in honor of Alexandria’s native son. Tasting and voting takes place in late January – early February and the winners are announced on Parade Day. Click here to see participating restaurants.

George Washington’s Mount Vernon Events

3200 Mount Vernon Memorial Highway Mount Vernon, VA 22121 Continue to celebrate General Washington’s birthday at his beloved estate. Guests can listen to members of the Washington family recount stories about the General and visit with George and Martha Washington. They can also enjoy hoecakes made over an open fire, #PoseLikeThePrez in the Education Center Lobby, observe wreathlayings at the Tomb, watch a gun salute, military marching drills, and Colonial dance demonstrations. Admission to Mount Vernon is free on the Monday President’s Day is celebrated, and on February 22, General Washington’s actual birthday. Are you spending President’s Day in Alexandria?
