The Potomac Yard Metro Station, a planned addition to Metro’s Yellow and Blue Lines, will lie between the existing Braddock Road and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport stations. This new Metro stop will provide several benefits for Alexandria and the surrounding community, including public transportation within walking distance for many residents.
The $370 million station will be funded by tax revenue from development in Potomac Yard in the coming decades. Additional funding is being provided by the Northern Virginia Transportation Authority, a state grant and low-interest loan, a special tax district in North and Central Potomac Yard, as well as contributions from developers.
In November 2020, the Alexandria City Council approved a permit that will allow the construction of a southwest access pavilion at Potomac Yard Metro station. This access point will be located at E. Glebe Road and Potomac Avenue. A $50 million grant from the state, part of the incentive package for enticing Amazon and Virginia Tech to locate their facilities there, will also fund the project.
Completion of the Potomac Yard Metro station is expected by the fall of 2022. When completed, signage at the station will read “Potomac Yard-VT,” highlighting the university’s planned $1 billion tech campus nearby.
The Bottom Line
