Opportunities to Help Feed the Hungry During the Holidays

Below are some local organizations seeking food and financial donation to help feed the hungry in our region.

  • ALIVE: ALIVE is a nonprofit that offers essential services to Alexandria residents in need, including food assistance. The ALIVE website has ways to donate. They are also in need of volunteers as well.
  • Grace Church: Grace Church provides food staples to needy families and individuals in the community. The pantry is open Mondays and Tuesdays and Fridays from 6:30 to 7:30 pm. The church website here has information about donating as well as what types of volunteers are needed.
  • Casa Chirilagua: Based in the Arlandria neighborhood on Mount Vernon Avenue, Casa helps support families who are struggling financially due to COVID-19. Casa Chirilagua has a list of needed items that the community has requested as well as volunteer opportunities to help with distribution events.
  • Carpenter’s Shelter: Carpenter’s Shelter  works to support the homeless to achieve sustainable independence through shelter, guidance, education, and advocacy. Carpenter’s Shelter can only accept food and other items noted on their donation list. They also have an Amazon wish list to shop from as well.
  • New Hope Housing: New Hope Housing is a local non-profit that runs several local homeless shelters. They’re currently accepting food and other donations such as clothes or toys for children. Head to their website here for specific needs and drop-off locations.
  • Christ House Food Pantry: The Catholic Charities of the Arlington diocese’s The St. Lucy Project operates at Christ House in Alexandria’s SW quadrant. Their website has a list of donation items that help keep their pantry stocked to serve the elderly with limited incomes, low-income households, children and the homeless.
  • Community Lodgings: Community Lodgings, which supports homeless and low-income families in. Alexandria, has an Amazon wish list with food and other needed items that can be sent directly to the nonprofit. They also have volunteer opportunities as well.
  • ACT for Alexandria: The ACT Now COVID-19 Response Fund gives funds to nonprofits providing emergency services such as food assistance to those impacted by the Covid pandemic. Head over to their website here to donate.
  • Volunteer Alexandria: Volunteer Alexandria has a variety of volunteer opportunities to help with  food distribution as well as other programs as well. Click here for an up to date list of projects.
  • Animal Welfare League of Alexandria: The shelter has a pet pantry program to provide assistance to pet owners in need and animals in need. They also have an Amazon wish list to send items directly to the shelter.
