As the name implies, this neighborhood is a stone’s throw from the Pentagon, headquarters of the United States Department of Defense, at the intersection of I-395 and Route 110. Pentagon City is less than a mile from the Potomac River, located on Metro’s Blue and Yellow lines. Pentagon City also is home to the Drug Enforcement Agency, the Transportation Security Administration, and many government contractors supporting the Department of Defense. It is bordered by the Aurora Highlands, Arlington Ridge, and Virginia Highlands Park neighborhoods.
Local History
Pentagon City’s ground was broken in 1941 the War Department, the precursor to today’s Department of Defense. This resulting influx of federal workers and military personnel gave rise to the neighborhood. It is also home to the Air Force Memorial, DEA Museum, and the National 9/11 Pentagon Memorial, which honors 184 people who lost their lives at the Pentagon on September 11, 2001.

The Fashion Centre at Pentagon City, a multi-level indoor shopping mall, anchors the neighborhood. Pentagon Row, an open air shopping center, features an outdoor ice rink during the winter months and hosts seasonal special events.
