Binge Watch: Our Team’s Recommendations

With awards season upon us, check out some of our favorite movies and TV shows to binge watch before the big award shows. 

 

The Crown

Based on an award-winning play, this Netflix drama chronicles the life, political rivalries, and romances of Queen Elizabeth II. From Elizabeth’s ascension to the throne at age 25 to her dealings with Winston Churchill, her husband Philip, struggling in his new role, and difficult younger sister, Margaret, you’ll quickly get swept up in the drama of this series.

This Netflix psychological thriller series follows Joe Goldberg, an unassuming New York bookstore manager who falls in love with a customer named Guinevere Beck. Joe soon develops an extreme, toxic, and delusional obsession with Beck, using her phone and social media to stalk her and remove the perceived obstacles to their romance. In Season 2, Joe moves to California for a fresh start, trying hard not to ruin a new relationship with his old ways.

 

Mindhunter

This two-season Netflix series follows FBI agents Holden Ford and Bill Tench, who launch the Behavior Science Unit in the late 1970s. This team pioneered the development of modern serial-killer profiling – and had to prove the effectiveness of this new way of catching criminals. Their work leads them to interview with some of the country’s most notorious serial killers, including Charles Manson, David Berkowitz, and Edmund Kemper. Season 2 pulls you in as the duo becomes entrenched in the Atlanta Child Murders investigation of 1979-1981.

 

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

Actor Rick Dalton gained fame and fortune as an actor in a 1950s TV Western. Now in 1969 Los Angeles, he is struggling to find meaningful work in the waning years of Hollywood’s Golden Age. He spends a lot of drinking and palling around with his longtime friend and stunt double. Dalton happens to be neighbors with Roman Polanski and Sharon Tate, whose futures are forever altered by members of the Manson Family.

 

The Irishman

This Martin Scorsese film tells the true story of Philadelphia mob hitman Frank “The Irishman” Sheeran. It follows Sheeran in his later years of life, looking back at the secrets he kept as a loyal member of the Bufalino crime family in the 1950s-1970s, particularly the role he played in the disappearance of Teamsters leader (and friend) Jimmy Hoffa. This movie features an all-star line-up and is a “can’t miss.”

 

Money Heist

This Netflix series is based on a Spanish television show, with three seasons and a fourth coming in April 2020. It follows a criminal mastermind (“The Professor”) planning the biggest heist in history — to print billions of euros in the Royal Mint of Spain. He and his fellow thieves take hostages and lock themselves in the mint and manipulate the police to carry out their master plan.

 

Victoria

This Amazon Prime series chronicles the early life of Queen Victoria, from age 18, when she took the throne, to her relationship and marriage to Prince Albert. There are three seasons of Victoria, plus a Christmas special.

 

The Mandalorian

Star Wars fans, take note! The Mandalorian is the first live-action series in the Star Wars franchise. This eight-episode Disney channel series premiered in November 2019 and a second season has been ordered. Not familiar with the Mandalorians? They are a race of warriors who featured in Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

 

Workin’ Moms

This Canadian series follows four thirty-something working mothers and friends trying to balance their jobs, family life, and love life in modern-day Toronto. In three seasons (a fourth is on its way next year), Workin’ Moms follows these four very different women through their Mommy and Me group as they navigate the daunting new challenges they face. 

 

Virgin River

Searching for a fresh start widow, Melinda “Mel” Monroe, a nurse practitioner, moves from LA to a remote northern California town. There in the redwoods, she meets an intriguing man. She soon discovers that small-town living isn’t quite as easy as she expected…Virgin River has released one season and has been renewed for a second.

 

Outlander

In this Netflix series, 1940s English combat nurse Claire Randall, while on her second honeymoon, is mysteriously swept back in time to 1743. Adapted from the best-selling books by Diana Gabaldon, this series follows Claire through her mysterious new world in which her freedom and life are threatened. In order to survive, Claire marries a Scottish warrior with a complicated past. Follow Claire as she is torn between two vastly different relationships in two totally different lives. 

 

Pride and Prejudice

Elizabeth Bennet lives with her parents and sisters in the English countryside. As the eldest, she faces mounting pressure from her parents to marry. When the outspoken Elizabeth is introduced to the handsome, single and rich Mr. Darcy, sparks fly. Mr. Darcy reluctantly finds himself falling in love with this woman, who is below his social class. Watch this classic to see if they can overcome their own pride and prejudices.
