Best Sledding Hills in Alexandria, VA

Local favorites for the next snow day

With snow in the forecast for Alexandria, one of our favorite winter traditions is officially back: sledding. Growing up here, some of my best snow-day memories were made racing down neighborhood hills, and now it’s been just as fun watching my own kids discover their favorites.

If you’re looking for the best places to sled in Alexandria, here are a few trusted local go-tos, each with its own personality and a few tips to know before you head out.

Windmill Hill Park (Old Town)

This is a true Alexandria classic and one of my childhood favorites.

Why we love it:

  • Long, gentle runs that work for a wide range of ages

  • Easy to do multiple laps without total exhaustion

  • Its Old Town location makes it a great spot to meet up with friends and then warm up before or after at a nearby coffee shop or restaurant

Tip: This one fills up fast, earlier is better, especially with kids.

George Washington Masonic National Memorial Grounds

Legendary for a reason and another place I grew up sledding.

What makes it unique:

  • One side offers long, straight runs, great for older kids and adults

  • The opposite side has shorter runs back-to-back, perfect for quick laps and groups

Important note for this storm:
For the upcoming snowstorm, the grounds of the Masonic Temple will be closed, so sledding will not be permitted this time. (We’ll update this as access changes.)

Beach Park at Maury Elementary

A neighborhood favorite and currently my kids’ top pick.

Why families love it:

  • Easy access

  • Close to the playground

  • Great for younger sledders

Good to know:
The runs are shorter, which actually makes this spot ideal for little ones and first-timers.

Jefferson Manor Park

A reliable option once snow really sticks.

Why it works:

  • Open space with room to spread out

  • Convenient parking nearby

  • A mix of gentle and slightly steeper sections depending on conditions

Angel Park

Perfect for a calmer sledding experience.

Best for:

  • Toddlers and beginner sledders

  • Families looking for a low-key hill

A Note on Private Hills & Neighborhood Spots

Of course, many Alexandria neighborhoods have great hills in private yards, shared green spaces, or at country clubs. These can be wonderful sledding spots if you have permission or are an invited guest. Always be mindful of private property and access rules, especially on busy snow days.

Snow-Day Sledding Tips

  • Conditions can change quickly, icy patches can form as snow gets packed down

  • Watch carefully for roads, sidewalks, trees, and other obstacles near hills

  • Helmets are a great idea for kids

  • Dress appropriately: waterproof layers, gloves, hats, and warm boots make all the difference

Please Remember: Sledding is done at your own risk. Hill conditions vary based on snowfall, temperature, and foot traffic. Always use good judgment, watch for nearby roads and walkways, dress for winter conditions, and respect posted signs and closures.

Snow days don’t come often in Alexandria, which makes them feel extra special when they do. Whether you’re continuing a childhood tradition or starting a new one with your family, these hills are part of what makes winter here so memorable.

Stay warm, sled safely, and enjoy every minute.
