Silver Spring, located at the north apex of Washington, DC inside the Capital Beltway, is the fourth most populous city in Maryland. The highly urbanized area, surrounding the Silver Spring Metro station on the Red line, is a mix of residential neighborhoods and urban living.
Local History
The name, Silver Spring, refers to a nearby spring containing mica flakes that was discovered in 1840 by Francis Preston Blair. The spring’s location is marked today at downtown Acorn Park. The town developed as a streetcar suburb in the early 20th century.
