Vienna History

Located in Fairfax County in the Northern Virginia region, the town was originally called Ayr Hill. But a doctor named William Hendrick later renamed it after his hometown Vienna, New York, which was named after Vienna, Austria.

The original Fairfax County Courthouse, near the present-day Tysons Corner, was likely first European settlement in the Vienna area. Street names such as Old Courthouse Road and Lawyers Road still reflect that origin. Vienna served as a camp for forces on both sides of the Civil War. One of the Civil War’s earliest battles took place where the Vienna Community Center now stands.

In 2019, rankings site HomeSnacks named Vienna the best place to live in the state! Residents enjoy plenty of community events like Viva Vienna in May, Independence Day festivities, Oktoberfest, and the Holiday Stroll. Youth sports are very popular here and Vienna is home to its own theater company.

Vienna Entertainment

If you are eager to venture outside and get exercise, you can rent a bike from bike@vienna effortlessly. Then take a ride on the Washington & Old Dominion (W&OD) Railroad Regional Park that runs through Vienna. This 45-mile scenic “rail-trail” runs all the way from Arlington to Purcellville!

Take the kids to Jammin Java for one of its many kid concerts and performances, including local favorites like The Great Zucchini and Rocknoceros. Jammin’ Java also offers a great lineup of shows for adults too. Also, Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts gives everyone a wide range of experience from pop to country, orchestra to opera. And unlike many other venues, Wolf Trap lets you bring your own food and drinks to enjoy on the lawn during shows.

In Vienna, you can also taste local and regional flavors with a variety of delicious flavors. Chef Justė’s Maple Ave Restaurant, for instance, uses fresh, locally sourced ingredients to blend Southern cuisine with European influences in the heart of the town.

Visit the family-friendly landmark Vienna Inn, open since 1960. While it is best known for its Famous Chili Dogs, you can also get great sandwiches and salads here too.

Enjoy a local brew (from 4 oz tasters to growlers to half-barrels) and more at Caboose Brewing Company & Tavern. Meals here are made with farm-to-table ingredients from local purveyors. Dogs are welcome on the patio!
