Tauxemont History

Founded in 1941, Tauxemont was designed with a conscious effort to blend in with its natural setting. Its walkable roads, mature trees, natural landscape, and variety of wildlife are embraced by residents. No sidewalks, curbs, gutters, or street lights interfere with this leafy enclave.

Listed in the National Register of Historic Place and the Virginia Landmarks Register, Tauxemont is considered to be one of the first suburban developments in Northern Virginia.

Tauxemont Real Estate

The charming neighborhood of Tauxemont is nestled between the George Washington Parkway and Fort Hunt Road in the Fairfax County section of Alexandria.

Tauxemont’s original developers sought to find a use for leftover World War II materials and supplies and so used them in the construction of these homes. The homes’ design was the result of the “modern movement” using basic materials, large windows, and open space. The original 1,200 square foot, one-story homes had three bedrooms, one bath, a kitchen, and a combination living/dining room with openness and light that made them seem larger.

Today, some of the original homes have been replaced by much larger multi-level structures. Tauxemont’s 114 homes range from two-bedroom, one-bath to seven-bedroom, six-bath homes. In 2019, Tauxemont homes sold between the upper $500K to the mid $800Ks.

Tauxemont Community

Today, Tauxemont is home to tennis courts, a playground, a community house, a cooperative preschool, and a baseball field. Tauxemont’s most notable feature is its private well water system, run by the Tauxemont Community Association.
