Parkfairfax History

In order to meet the growing demand of the wartime federal workforce and at the request of President Roosevelt, the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company of New York purchased just over 200 acres on the western end of Alexandria in 1941. A total of 286 apartment buildings were then built, offering 15 different floor plans. The Parkfairfax began as a rental community for these many federal workers.

The units were converted to condominiums in 1977, originally selling between $27,000 to $54,000. Parkfairfax counts Presidents Richard Nixon and Ford among its previous residents. In 1999, Parkfairfax was named to the National Register and the Virginia Landmarks Register as a Historic District.
